Traditionally an important commercial and fishing port, Portimão is one of the most popular destinations in the Algarve and a modern city, the fantastic beaches, the proximity to the mouth of the River Alvor offers with its beautiful nature and plenty of entertainment.
The attraction of the region lies in the amazing diversity of its landscape and its beaches. Tourists who want to enjoy the sun, have a choice between long beaches such as the ever-popular Praia da Rocha and the many smaller, more sheltered beaches such as Prainha, which lies west of the town.
Many of the beaches of Portimão are lined with golden cliffs typical of this area and have fantastic rock outcrops, of which divers and snorkelers are thrilled.

 

The Praia do Alvor, the westernmost beach in Portimao region is entirely different. Instead of cliffs and rocks, found here are the sparkling white sand dunes of the barrier beach that separates the sea from the lagoon and wetlands at the mouth of the River Alvor. The area is particularly lively in August, because then, many people celebrate the popular Sardine Festival.
Boats leave from here also for a scenic trip on the Arade River, where visitors have the opportunity to admire the diverse landscape inland.

 

The lively nightlife of Portimão has nothing to do with the peace and tranquility of fishing villages of old. The marina is the epitome of modern Portimão and is very busy in the summer, because it offers a large selection of bars, restaurants and night clubs in a very exclusive neighborhood. Praia da Rocha is the liveliest area in the evening, because there are many bars and night clubs where you can party all night, and a casino that attracts many foreign visitors.
